Aranjuez began to take shape as a royal site with Philip 2nd
and the Bourbons. It was they who planned the city, its parks
and gardens and the irrigation network which turned the landscape
into the appropriate site for holding court in springtime every
year until 1890. Monarchs had different favourite pastimes;
Philip 5 was inclined to music while Barbara of Braganza enjoyed
boating on the Tagus and all monarchs favoured hunting , the
royal pastime due to the abundance of game.
It is easy to appreciate that Aranjuez was and still is an ideal
place for enjoyment and relaxing.
